Louisiana Families for Vaccines State Co-Director
Location: Must reside in-state, preferably in or near Baton Rouge, with the ability to travel frequently to the state capitol and occasionally nationally

About Us
American Families for Vaccines (AFV) is a fast-growing, mission-driven organization mobilizing families, clinicians, and communities to support pro-vaccine policy and defeat anti-vaccine extremism. Our state chapters defend strong vaccine policy, fight misinformation, and advocate for evidence-based public health. As we scale both our 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) entities, we are expanding our national infrastructure and growing the number of state-based Families for Vaccines chapters.
Position Summary
The Co-Director for Louisiana Families for Vaccines will serve as the organization’s lead strategic policy director, working alongside a Co-Director focused on grassroots organizing and community mobilization. This full-time, senior-level position centers on policy strategy, legislative engagement, and high-level state leadership.
The Policy Co-Director must live in or close enough to the state capitol to travel there frequently, as this role requires regular presence at the legislature, agency meetings, coalition briefings, and rapid-response policy events.
The Co-Director will help shape and execute statewide strategy, oversee legislative and regulatory work, represent the organization in policy and media spaces, and collaborate closely with the Organizing Co-Director to ensure seamless alignment between grassroots power-building and policy impact.
This is a high-autonomy role ideal for someone who excels at strategic thinking, relationship-building, and navigating complex political environments.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership
Serve as the lead strategist on policy, legislative, and regulatory priorities for the state chapter
Co-lead statewide planning, campaign development, and organizational direction with the Organizing Co-Director
Represent Louisiana Families for Vaccines in high-level policy coalitions, media engagements, and strategic planning forums
Ensure alignment between policy goals, community needs, and national AFV strategic priorities
Policy & Government Relations
Maintain a frequent presence at the state capitol, attending legislative hearings, meetings, and coalition briefings
Cultivate and deepen relationships with legislators, agency staff, caucuses, and policy influencers
Track, analyze, and respond to legislative and regulatory threats or opportunities related to immunization policy
Draft and present policy memos, fact sheets, position statements, and testimony
Lead policymaker education efforts, including briefings, roundtables, and one-on-one meetings
Communications and Public Voice
Serve as a primary spokesperson on policy issues
Develop policy-focused communication materials, including talking points, briefings, action alerts, and op-eds
Collaborate with AFV national communications staff to ensure message discipline, accuracy, and alignment
Grassroots & Coalition Integration
Work closely with the Organizing Co-Director to ensure community stories, needs, and perspectives inform policy advocacy
Participate in advocacy days, community meetings, and storytelling efforts as needed
Help connect grassroots advocates with policymakers and shape opportunities for public testimony and engagement
Operational & Organizational Leadership
Contribute to grant writing, reporting, and strategic planning
Manage aspects of the state policy budget, in collaboration with national AFV teams
Supervise or mentor policy fellows, interns, or part-time support staff as the chapter grows
Provide monthly and quarterly updates on policy progress, opportunities, and challenges

Required
5+ years of experience in legislative affairs, policy advocacy, government relations, or related fields
Proven track record shaping or running policy or legislative campaigns
Deep knowledge of the state’s political landscape, institutions, and policy processes
Ability to maintain a regular presence at the state capitol (residency in or near the capitol area strongly preferred)
Exceptional strategic thinking, relationship-building, and communication skills
Experience working collaboratively with grassroots groups and/or marginalized communities
Commitment to evidence-based policy, vaccine access, and health equity
Willingness to work some evenings/weekends and travel in-state as required
Preferred Qualifications
Background in public health, law, political science, or government
Familiarity with legislative tracking systems, Quorum, Canva, or other digital tools
Bilingual or multilingual proficiency

Pay Transparency
